How Fire Sprinkler Systems Work

Automatic sprinkler systems detect fire by the change in the temperature of a room and use high-pressure water to suppress the flames.

Sprinkler systems are equipped with a plug, a heat-reactive element, a deflector and a frame. The plug blocks the flow of water and is often made from a fusible alloy, of which the melting point is around 70°C – this is known as Wood’s metal and is a mix of tin, bismuth, lead, and cadmium.

Another design uses a glass bulb which is filled with a glycerin-based liquid that expands inside the bulb, causing it to shatter and leading to the sprinkler water being released. There are a variety of bulb sizes and types, which will give different reaction times, depending on how much heat they can withstand. The speed at which a fire sprinkler system is activated depends on the size of the glass bulb used. Quick response fire sprinklers will often use 3mm bulbs which make the liquid very sensitive to heat changes in a room, whereas standard response sprinklers use 5mm glass bulbs which mean they withstand a higher temperature. Response time can also differ based on the room and the fire’s characteristics.

Only the sprinkler that is above the fire will activate (unless it is a deluge fire sprinkler system) which maximises the available water pressure, greatly reducing the intensity of the fire and in some cases extinguishing it entirely.

Why have a Fire Sprinkler System?

Having a good fire sprinkler system in place in your workplace can severely reduce the damage caused by fires and helps to control the spread of the flames. Sprinklers are triggered when the heat of the fire reaches the required temperature to activate the heads, so this means fires can be caught and controlled earlier, allowing those in the building to evacuate more safely.

Sprinkler systems are a brilliant investment which will last you a long time, especially when maintained well. 99% of fires are controlled or even put out by sprinkler systems, so you’re investing in your safety and the longevity of your property.

Always get a professional to install your fire sprinkler system. Artius FP® is fully qualified and accredited to carry out every step of sprinkler system installation as well as a number of other fire safety implementations. If you want to discuss your own fire safety systems, whether residential or commercial, then get in touch with us today. We’ll happily guide you through all of our services and can’t wait to work with you.

Sprinkler System Supply

Only approved quality materials will be sourced for our fire sprinkler systems. Bespoke fire pumps are built to order when required as are our sprinkler control sets.

Sprinkler System Supply

Artius FP use CPVC pipe for majority of our installations. With their natural immunity to scale, corrosion, and microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC), CPVC pipe and fittings offer long, low-maintenance service lives that typically exceed traditional metallic systems. CPVC systems have a 50-year life expectancy and are rated for continuous service for 175 pounds per square inch (psi) at 150-degrees F. The life expectancy of steel varies depending on corrosion factors and other environmental considerations.

It has a twenty-year proven track record for fire sprinkler systems and is fully tested and approved by UL, FM and LPCB, as well as being accepted by all leading insurers. In the UK this product has been tested and is listed by WRAS for use in contact with cold potable water.

Fire Sprinkler Heads

Fire Sprinkler Heads are crucial to the performance of the fire sprinkler system. It is essential that they instantly operate when required.
Artius FP only supply UL approved sprinkler heads from world leading manufacturers. For aesthetic reasons we recommend concealed sprinkler heads but can supply other heads depending on requirements.

Fire Pump Sets and System Valve Groups

Supplied pump sets and valve groups are bespoke. This ensures that each fire sprinkler system has a pump set or valve group designed and built for its particular requirements.

Why Should Sprinklers be Serviced, Tested & Maintained?

It is important to ensure that every component within a sprinkler system operates correctly in the event of a fire. BS EN 12845:2015 stipulates the maintenance and servicing requirements to ensure fault free operation in the event of fire. If you have a sprinkler system which is not being maintained properly, your insurance may be invalid, and you may be committing a criminal offence under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

I could not recommend them enough

I am really pleased with the service provided by Artius Fire Protection. As a leaseholder with Westminster Council, I took the initiative to upgrade my front door, which was over 25 years old, to an approved FD30 rated fire door. After extensive research, I encountered several companies, but many were only interested if I was part of a larger bulk order. Artius Fire Protection, on the other hand, was more than happy to assist with a one-door installation tailored to my needs. They were very responsive and provided full support during the process of replacing my door with the council, which was not exactly straightforward. They even arranged for door colour samples to be sent to my address to help me decide on the best colour. During the initial consultation to help me choose the right door for me, my emails were always answered almost immediately. Based on my experience, I could not recommend them enough.
